Valentine’s Day Flowers

The story of Valentine’s Day began in Rome when the emperor decided that single men made better soldiers. He completely outlawed marriages for young men, but a young priest, Valentine, being so upset by this performed marriages in secret anyway. Soon he was discovered by the emperor, thrown in jail and sentenced to death! While in jail, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. He sent her a love letter signed “From your Valentine” just before he was put to death on February 14, 270AD.

Young lovers, husbands and wives continue to honor Saint Valentine on this day, by expressing their love and affection towards one another. For years flowers have been the gift of choice for Valentine’s Day, symbolizing fertility, love, marriage, and romance in relationships.

Which type of flower should you go with? Red & pink roses have always been a favorite, but that is not to say that other types flowers would not be equally as delightful. Hot pink orchids, multicolored tulip arrangements, and carnations are all quite stunning this season. This fun creative idea from Martha Stewart, using flowers on top of gift boxes, is a good one to consider as well!

The Meaning of the Purple Rose: Love at First Sight & Royalty

Purple roses have a captivating spirit and are a great alternative for any romantic occasions. Their eye catching shades of purple are truly stunning. These roses have symbolism that is tied to enchantment, and have many time-honored meanings associated with them.

Purple roses have been a symbol of falling in love at first sight for many years. After meeting someone, these roses are sent by flower shops to show that the initial attraction has carved a deep impression on you, and that you feel the person is charming and simply irresistible. Expressing this beautiful feeling of falling in love, the hope is that the person will be much more familiar to you in the near future. So, as a recipient of purple roses, which are among the rarest, one should feel especially flattered having such beauty and charm, as to have captured the heart of the sender at the very first sight!

In addition, the color purple has always been a symbol of royalty, representing all things grand, glorious and noble. Therefore it makes sense that purple roses also symbolize these very things, as the mark of wealth and luxury. The first famous purple was a deep shade known as Tyrian purple. It was once reserved for rich and royal leaders like Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. Maintaining the air of noble regality and pure splendor, brides love to use purple roses in weddings. Even seen in the movie Bride Wars, actress Kate Hudson carried a simple bouquet of purple roses: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/help-finding-dress-replica.  The most fashionable arrangements and bouquets of roses by florists are grouped in a bold range of rich hues, including shades like violet, lavender, and lilac roses.

Meanings of the Purple Rose Include: Love at first sight, enchantment, fantasy, wonder, impossibility, grand, glorious, noble, wealth, luxury, dignity, pride, success, accomplishment, admiration, calmness, ease, regality, splendor, discretion, nobility, sacred, accomplishment and admiration.

The Meaning of the Orange Rose: Desire & Enthusiasm

The Meaning of the Orange Rose: Desire & Enthusiasm

Orange roses are the perfect way to express admiration and attraction. Similar to how the red rose means passion and the yellow rose means friendship; orange roses are a bridge between these two emotions. With their warm, vibrant tones, orange roses indicate a sense of enthusiasm that the sender feels for the recipient. They are vibrant, cheerful and express fascination when you give them to someone.  Orange roses make an excellent choice for a new relationship that you wish to pursue further, because they symbolize a happy, loving sort of enthusiasm, while indicating desire at the same time.

Peach roses are often sent from flower shops as a gesture of appreciation or gratitude as opposed to a token of love. The color of their bloom is a bit more gentle, so they are a perfect way to show how much you appreciate or miss a dear friend. Peach roses also convey sociability and friendship, sending the message “Let’s get together”. The palest peach shades, like champagne, convey a sense of modesty.

The wonderful thing about orange roses is that they come in all the colors of a romantic sunset, including those in tangerine colors, salmon, peach, apricot and tropical fruit colored varieties. The unique blends of these colors are incredibly alluring, and wedding planners have a lot of fun with this fashionable color palette.  Even Oprah is very fond of varieties of orange roses, as she has incorporated them into her rose garden and the décor of her California home, known as the Teahouse.  http://www.oprah.com/home/Oprahs-Teahouse/4

For those getting married in the later part of the summer, as an alternative the softer orange color palette helps give a late summer feel without a complete fall look. Here is a great website showing Nantucket weddings and how fall wedding flower colors can be kept on the lighter side http://nantucketweddingsunveiled.com/blog/tag/flowers/page/3/

Meanings of the Orange Rose Include:  Desire, Enthusiasm, Admiration, Attraction, Passion, Excitement, Warmth, Pride, Happiness, and Fascination

Meanings of the Peach Rose Include: Appreciation, Sincerity, Gratitude, Modesty, Sympathy, and Modesty

The Meaning of the Red Rose: Love & Romance

So often we think about the type of flower, how it looks and smells. Maybe even just the price alone is what we are concerned with, but do we think about the meaning? When at the florist, why are we even buying the flowers and what are we trying to say? The type of flower itself says a lot, and a rose embodies a wealth of significance. It is ultimately a symbol of love.

Red roses in particular have a primary significance of love, romance and passion. They were first introduced to Europe from China in the 1800’s, and have been expressed throughout history in numerous works of art, from classical paintings and poetry to modern day music and drama.

In Christian love, a rose bush grew at the site of Christ’s death on the cross. His blood is often associated with a red rose, combined with its thorns symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice.

Some of the earliest cultures often decorated wedding ceremonies with red roses. So they became known as a symbol for love and fidelity, as we see here at this beautiful red rose inspired wedding in Oahu, Hawaii http://www.oahuwedding.com/2007/12/inspired-by-rose-winter-wedding.html. As the custom of exchanging roses and flowers as gifts of affection continued, the red rose naturally became the preferred flower to send the strongest message of love.

Meanings of the Red Rose Include: Love, Romance, Beauty, Passion, Desire, Admiration, Immortal Love, Health, Memorial, Courage, Respect, Power, and Sacrifice.
